Listening To Your Body

Listening To Your Body

I want to start by saying, when you are ready for some changes in your life, you will know it. You wil feel ready to read that book about raw food, or start working out daily, or start drinking your water, maybe even starting to do a body cleanse. I’m saying this because, I feel that I am ready to better my diet, I’m starting to get interested in super foods, I’m eating more raw foods, drinking what will sound gross to you, drinking my vinegar water/cayenne pepper drink every morning. My point is, I was ready for this, where not so long ago, I was not ready.

I had checked out a book from the library called Superfoods by David Wolfe. A book I promptly took back to the library after flipping through the pages, and thinking there was nothing in the book that I could relate to. Gogi berries to Cacao, to Blue-Green Algae, coconut oil, bee products, seriously a book about food, but nothing I thought I could find in my local food market, make for dinner, and feed my family. After watching the movie Food Matters, and hearing David Wolfe speak in the film, something clicked with what David Wolfe was saying, and I became motivated to give super foods a second chance.

The line that David spoke that caught my attention was about, if you looked out of a plane window, and saw the vast amount of farm land that was dedicated to crops that are helping to make our population unhealthy, like corn for example. The same crops that are helping to hurt our environment. He argued that if we use that land to grow superfoods, not only do we become more healthy, but so does our planet. I very much liked the sound of that, and it got me thinking I might like to revisit his book on those particular super foods.

The second time around, when I got the book Superfoods out of the library, was a completely different experience. I read with a new interest on how coconut oils effect my body, what I should look for when buying bee products, and recipes galore on what to make out of all these very odd foods. As I am on this journey to improve my diet, my immune system, at a time when I am learning about more and more toxins in my environment, I am so happy to report that my age spots on the backs of my hands are disappearing, the bags under my eyes are evening out, and I seem to have more energy (in the mornings at least). These positive changes are because of the changes in my diet, more raw foods, more veggies, cutting down on or cutting out processed foods.

My realization is that I need to listen to my body, and the changes that my body is making as I age. A lot of these changes are happening because I am defficient in some nutrients, and as I add those valuable nutrients back into my system. I am rewarded in ways that no hand cream or energy drink could ever come close to. A hand cream or energy drink is not going to protect my body from cancer, but superfoods most definitely will.
